What bathtub refinishing is—and what it is not

Bathtub refinishing (also called resurfacing or reglazing) renews the visible surface of an existing tub. It is a way to address a dull finish, stubborn staining, an outdated color, chips or worn areas while keeping the tub, the plumbing connections and the surrounding wall in place. For many homeowners it is an alternative to demolition and replacement.

It is not a plumbing repair and it does not change the bathroom layout. A tub that leaks, moves when you step in or has damage underneath needs that condition evaluated first. That is why every ILS bathtub project starts with an assessment of the material, the existing finish and any earlier coating before a finish is recommended.

Tubs we evaluate for refinishing

  • Fiberglass tubs
  • Acrylic tubs
  • Porcelain tubs
  • Cast iron tubs
  • Steel tubs
  • Cultured marble tubs
  • Jetted & garden tubs
  • Walk-in tubs

Material matters because preparation differs. A porcelain-enameled cast iron tub, a one-piece fiberglass unit and a previously refinished tub each need a different approach. Jetted tubs can also be discussed with jet deletion; see bathroom accessibility upgrades.

Our repair-first process

  1. 1. Assess the tub. Identify the material, visible damage, prior coatings and what you want to change—color, finish, or damage.
  2. 2. Repair first. We repair before we restore. Chips, cracks, rust and worn areas are addressed before any finish is applied.
  3. 3. Prepare and refinish. The surface is cleaned and prepared correctly, then finished using the ILS Signature Surface System™ selected for that tub.
  4. 4. Confirm the details in writing. Before work begins, ask for written pricing, scheduling, the coating-specific return-to-use instructions and the LIMITED workmanship warranty terms that apply to your property.

What to include in your estimate request

  • A wide photo of the whole tub and a close-up of the drain area
  • Close-ups of chips, rust, cracks or peeling
  • The tub material if known, and whether it has been refinished before
  • Whether the tile surround or wall is part of the request
  • Your ZIP code and whether this is the main or a guest bathroom

The estimate form asks for your name, phone, project type and ZIP first. Photos and extra details can be added in the optional next step.

Pricing, timing & warranty

No fixed price or cure time is promised on this page. Pricing is provided in writing after the surface is assessed. Curing and return-to-use depend on the coating selected for your project; follow the written ILS instructions for that coating.

ILS offers a 5-year LIMITED workmanship warranty for fully owner-occupied residential properties only: the homeowner lives there and no part is rented. A 1-year LIMITED workmanship warranty applies to all rental and commercial properties, including owner-occupied homes with any portion rented to tenants. Coverage is for eligible adhesion/delamination, subject to the written warranty terms and exclusions.

Frequently asked questions

Can my tub be refinished if it was refinished before?
Often it can be evaluated. Peeling or failing earlier coatings usually need to be addressed during preparation, so tell us about any previous refinishing and send close-up photos of the affected areas.
Does refinishing fix a leaking or flexing tub?
No. A new finish does not repair plumbing leaks or structural movement. Those conditions need evaluation first; soft spots in fiberglass are covered on our surface repair page.
How long before I can use the surface again?
Curing and return-to-use depend on the coating selected for your project. Follow the written ILS instructions for that coating before using the surface.
How much does bathtub refinishing cost?
Pricing depends on the tub material, its condition and any repairs. Our bathtub refinishing cost guide explains what affects the estimate; your written estimate is based on the actual surface.
