When resurfacing a countertop makes sense

Countertop resurfacing applies a new finish over an existing countertop or vanity top. It suits homeowners who are comfortable with the current size, shape and sink location but not with the color, worn finish or dated look of the surface. Because the top stays in place, the cabinets, backsplash and plumbing are not removed for the resurfacing itself.

Resurfacing is a different goal from replacement. If you want a new footprint, a different sink layout or a new material such as natural stone, replacement is the better conversation. If the existing top is structurally sound but looks tired, resurfacing may be worth assessing first.

Countertops we evaluate

  • Laminate countertops
  • Cultured marble
  • Solid surface
  • Tile countertops
  • Bathroom vanity tops
  • Integrated vanity basins

Edges, seams, sink cutouts and areas of swelling or lifting laminate affect suitability. Water damage to the substrate needs to be evaluated before any finish is recommended.

Our repair-first process

  1. 1. Assess the countertop. Identify the material, edges, seams, sink area and any previous coating, and discuss the look you want.
  2. 2. Repair first. We repair before we restore. Chips, burns, cracks and damaged edges are addressed before the new finish.
  3. 3. Prepare and resurface. Surrounding areas are protected and the surface is prepared and finished with the system selected for that material.
  4. 4. Confirm the details in writing. Before work begins, ask for written pricing, scheduling, the coating-specific return-to-use instructions and the LIMITED workmanship warranty terms that apply to your property.

What to include in your estimate request

  • A full photo of the countertop or vanity and the sink area
  • Close-ups of edges, seams, chips or burns
  • The material if known (laminate, cultured marble, solid surface, tile)
  • Whether it is a kitchen top, a bathroom vanity or both
  • Your ZIP code and the finish or color direction you have in mind

The estimate form asks for your name, phone, project type and ZIP first. Photos and extra details can be added in the optional next step.

Pricing, timing & warranty

No fixed price or cure time is promised on this page. Pricing is provided in writing after the surface is assessed. Curing and return-to-use depend on the coating selected for your project; follow the written ILS instructions for that coating.

ILS offers a 5-year LIMITED workmanship warranty for fully owner-occupied residential properties only: the homeowner lives there and no part is rented. A 1-year LIMITED workmanship warranty applies to all rental and commercial properties, including owner-occupied homes with any portion rented to tenants. Coverage is for eligible adhesion/delamination, subject to the written warranty terms and exclusions.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cultured marble vanity with an integrated sink be resurfaced?
It can be evaluated. Include the basin, the overflow and any crazing or cracks in your photos so the team can assess the whole top.
Can laminate with swollen or lifting areas be resurfaced?
Swelling usually means moisture has reached the substrate. That area needs evaluation, and sometimes repair or replacement, before resurfacing is considered.
How long before I can use the surface again?
Curing and return-to-use depend on the coating selected for your project. Follow the written ILS instructions for that coating before using the surface.
Do I need to remove my backsplash?
Not for resurfacing in most cases—the existing top stays in place. Tell us about the backsplash material so it can be discussed during the assessment.
